Exporting used vehicles from Japan

These are regulations for importing a vehicle into following countries.

  • Australia
    Vehicles must be built prior to January 1 1989 or imported under the RAWS (Registered Automotive Workshop Scheme).

    Vehicles using CFC gas for air conditioning, must be replaced by hydrochlorofluorocarbon. The removal of the CFC gas must be certified by an approved agent. This service can be completed prior to export by JEVIC.

    Vehicles must pass a quarantine inspection by Australian Quarantine and Inspection Services (AQIS) on arrival.

  • Canada
    (The following regulations apply to vehicles exported/imported from Japan to Canada)

    Vehicles must be greater than 15 years old.
    Vehicles must pass a quarantine inspection by Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) on arrival.

  • Kenya
    Each vehicle is required to pass the Kenya Road Worthiness Inspection conducted by JEVIC. This inspection is similar to the Japanese Periodic Inspection - Shaken. This inspection must be completed prior to export and shipping.

    No vehicle can be older than 8 years from the First Registration. The difference between the date of registration and the date of manufacture shall be not more than one year.
    Vehicle must be Right hand drive.
    It is prohibited to import a vehicle to Kenya with a tampered odometer reading.

  • Malta
    The following regulations apply to used vehicles in categories M1 (private) and N1 (commercial G.V.W. ≤3500kg).

    Each vehicle is required to have its odometer verified (Odometer Inspection) by JEVIC. A Certificate of Inspection and window sticker will be issued to confirm the true travelled. This inspection must be completed prior to export and shipping.

    Each vehicles is required to pass a VCA (Single Vehicle Approval Inspection). This inspection must be completed prior to export.

  • Uganda
    Each vehicle is required to pass the Uganda Road Worthiness Inspection conducted by JEVIC. This inspection is similar to the Japanese Periodic Inspection - Shaken. This inspection must be prior to export and shipping

    Vehicles must be free of CFC (R12) gas.
    There is no age limitation for vehicles entering Zambia.
    Both Left and Right hand drive vehicles are permitted.

  • United Kingdom
    All vehicles built after 1997 must meet emission and noise regulation requirements.

    There are differing regulations depending on the age of vehicle. The regulations apply to the inspection of the vehicle on arrival in UK.

    Vehicles less than 3 years old;
    Each vehicle must pass the (ESVA) Enhanced Single Vehicle Approval inspection. Note most vehicles ex Japan will require some modification to enable the vehicle to pass this inspection.

    Vehicles greater than 3 years old but less than 10 year old;
    Required to pass the ESVA and MOT testing.

    Vehicles greater than 10 years old;
    Required to pass the MOT testing. No ESVA required.

  • Zambia
