Jevic Announces Technological Investments
and Operational Realignment
for better Efficiencies and Improved Service.
Carrier Performs 100 millionth Electronic Transaction on “Old System”
as It Rolls Out Replacement Technology.
Delanco NJ…. Jevic President and CEO David H. Gorman announced long-term investments in technology and an operational realignment today, Monday April 7. “Our proprietary ‘J-Cat’ system went into service in early 1998 and just recently processed its 100 millionth e-transaction,” Gorman points out. “On the same day we reach this milestone we are in the middle of a roll-out of multi-million dollar technological improvements and an operational re-alignment of our Breakbulk-Free system.” Jevic Senior management, other company executives and outside consultants had been meeting for several months to analyze all lanes, technology, and operational facilities in search of the best combination for overall efficiency. This resulted in multi-year investments in two new software systems, new mainframes, new servers and a realignment of their Breakbulk-Free system. Founded in 1981, Jevic has never used the standard hub-and-spoke configuration of most major LTL carriers. Instead of having intermediate stops and end-of-the-line delivery terminals, the company relies on longer “peddle” runs and more direct delivery in a load-to-ride system. In the Jevic operating model freight is picked up near a regional facility, returns to that facility and is then loaded out on a truck with several delivery stops on it en route to its final destination, making end-of-the-line terminals unnecessary. The company announced April 4th that it was taking 4 of its 10 facilities offline to create better efficiencies for direct delivery into the southern market. The operational realignment will be completed by June 2nd and a letter explaining the changes was sent by the company to all customers in and around the four facilities. “Load-to-ride, direct delivery is what has allowed Jevic to revolutionize the motor carrier industry by improving transit times and lowering claims ratios for our customers,” Gorman states. “The Breakbulk-Free model is the foundation of our success.” On the information technology side, Jevic has retained the services of two separate firms with complimentary technologies. One firm, working in tandem with the Jevic Information Technology group, created in cab technology, which allows the fleet to operate more efficiently while increasing profits. This real time system allows Jevic to respond quickly to rapidly changing situations as they occur. The other vendor, also working closely with the Jevic IT group, has developed technology that provides more measurement and more safety statistics as well as automatic regulatory compliance with IFTA and IRP. The system also produces and tracks engine diagnostics. “I am proud of our employees’ efforts with this entire process,” explains Gorman. “It really says something about the dedication and expertise of our people when, back on March 31st, we could transfer all in-cab communications from our old system to these newer satellite-based systems and it was transparent to our drivers, customer service personnel and, most importantly, our customers.” The final piece of the puzzle goes into effect on April 19th and 20th, when Jevic will install a new, $600,000, technologically advanced IBM mainframe. The investment will upgrade all servers and hardware, significantly improve web speed, and compliment the new technologies. In addition to these most recent improvements, Jevic recently signed 3-year contracts with AT&T and Microsoft, and upgraded the company sales force with the latest and fastest technologies provided by Nextel, Verizon Wireless and AT&T Mobility services. Jevic Transportation Inc, an affiliate of Sun Capital Partners, is a less-than-truckload transportation services provider that has carved a distinctive position in the marketplace due to its exclusive Breakbulk-Free Operating model. The company provides an appealing alternative to the major LTL carriers in its ability to customize its products and services and is superior to most niche carriers in size and scale. Jevic provides product depth and customization for their marketplace with services such as The Heat Fleet; Jevic 100% Guaranteed Service; Partial Trailer load Service, and Multi-regional and National capabilities in one system. In addition, without the multiple handling associated with the other, traditional, Breakbulk, or “hub-and-spoke” carriers, the company provides an industry low claims ratio, creating more efficiency in their customers’ supply chains.
