Environmental, Health and Safety ProgramsJEVIC’s environmental, health, and safety programs are managed by the Safety and Hazmat Departments within the Corporate Risk Management Group. All operations and management personnel within Risk Management, and Senior Management support the programs. Environmental, health, and safety stewardship are basic principles within with the company’s Risk Management philosophy of protecting the environment and assets of the organization. The continuing objectives of JEVIC’s EH&S Programs are to define, organize, provide continuous training, encourage participation, and proactively manage practices and processes designed to ensure regulatory compliance and minimize company losses. The Hazardous Materials and Environmental Compliance department is accountable for company compliance with environmental (EPA, RCRA), workplace safety (OSHA), and DOT hazardous material employee training (DOT) requirements. Environmental programs include a comprehensive waste management plan designed to minimize waste generation through prompt resolution of OSD issues. Priority is given to returning all OSD freight either to the shipper or consignee. Waste and potential adverse environmental impact as the result of transportation incidents are also minimized through driver and dock training. Jevic has a 24/7 Hazmat Department support team consisting of a supervisor, technical specialist, and administrative assistant, all which are part of the company’s internal emergency response support team. They are responsible for spill response oversight and reporting, and all DOT and emergency response driver and dock training. Drivers are instructed in company emergency notification procedures that are included in Jevic’s Emergency Response Plan as part of their training orientation and hazmat 3-year recurrency training. This training requires immediate notification to the Hazmat Dept. who will direct and advise the driver of any subsequent action including the use, where appropriate, of driver spill kits that are issued to all drivers. Jevic maintains a contract with a national spill response contractor who provides 24/7 national spill/emergency response service for hazardous materials and large non-regulated material incidents. Drivers, where appropriate and depending on the amount and type of non-regulated material spilled, can be directed by the Hazmat Department to use their spill kits to mitigate the spill. Emergency response is also enhanced through the use of a company-wide software program for proper placarding. This program gives all facilities the ability to properly answer any questions and provide proper placarding information to all drivers at any time during transportation.
